2018 Subaru outback one week old have used the defrosters one time on a cold morning light frost on windshield. Let car run for 10 minutes to warm up came out and noticed a crack on lower windshield next to wipers.
by the time I got on the road maybe 5 miles the crack was over a foot long now. Turns out there is a heater imbedded in the window at the lower black section that heats the wiper area when the defrosters are used to melt ice to keep the wipers from sticking to the window from ice. After showing It to the dealer they said it was a rock chip??? The windshield manufacture has a problem with the heater strip over heating and causing a thermal shock to the window and a small divot forms next to the heated strip and then a crack forms soon after.
After doing a little research I have found the windshield problems have been around since 2014 models. Dealers said oh that hasn't happened on the 2018 models it was fixed
